In this article, I will discuss the background and history of women’s colleges, followed by some of their key characteristics: academic life, social life, cross-registration, and application tips. But a women’s college might not be your cup of tea if you’re looking for schools with big party scenes, Greek life and strong athletic programs. There are several factors that make women’s colleges worthwhile, from smaller class sizes that include some of the smartest students around the world, to missions that promote women empowerment in male dominated fields. Usually following a liberal arts curriculum, today’s women’s colleges are elite institutions which have traditionally admitted only women into their schools. These were integral parts of my experience at Wellesley College, with the collective goal to smash the patriarchy as an added bonus. Students may cross-register within The Claremont Colleges when off-campus enrollments fall within the guidelines listed in the Policies and Procedures section of this catalog. See guidelines concerning off-campus majors and cross-registration. Arrangements for pursuing this major must be made with an off-campus major adviser in the appropriate program.
Students who wish to pursue a major offered by another Claremont College may arrange to do so by fulfilling the requirements of the major at that college. The department offers courses of study for the student interested in enlarging understanding of natural phenomena and courses for students desiring a major in biology, chemistry, physics, or some combination of these areas. Students are encouraged to take advantage of the department’s in-service training opportunities, such as laboratory, research, and teaching assistantships. The department curriculum, taught by a broadly trained science faculty, offers general and advanced courses and the opportunity for individual research projects. Because of the significant role of science and technology today, a knowledge of the methods and concepts of science is considered an essential part of a Scripps College education.
